Local knowledge

Working in Soho

Soho packs a lot into a small grid. Within W1D and W1F there are restaurants, bars, members’ clubs, post-production studios, shops and flats, often stacked in the same building. Much of the older stock is Georgian townhouses, many of them listed, sitting alongside Victorian and twentieth-century commercial blocks. All of Soho is in the City of Westminster and most of it falls within a conservation area, so any work that touches the fabric of a building needs care.

Drainage here is old and heavily used. Many buildings still rely on original clay drains and cast-iron soil stacks, and it is common for one drain run to serve several properties before it reaches the sewer. Soho also has a very high concentration of restaurant kitchens, which puts constant pressure on the system from fat, oil and grease. Even with grease traps fitted, deposits build up inside pipes over time and cause slow drainage, smells and eventually a full blockage.

Soho has a place in drainage history too. In 1854 Dr John Snow traced a cholera outbreak to the water pump on Broad Street, now Broadwick Street, and helped change how London thought about water and sewage. Much of the Victorian sewer network built in the decades that followed is still in use. When we are called out, we clear the blockage with rods or high-pressure water jetting, then run a CCTV camera through the pipe to check for cracks, displaced joints or collapse, and confirm the price of any repair before we start.

Access in Soho needs planning. Streets are narrow, many are one-way, loading is restricted and some streets have timed traffic restrictions. The area is inside the Congestion Charge zone and ULEZ. Our engineers know the grid and carry equipment the last stretch on foot where a van cannot stop. We work 24 hours a day, so for restaurants and bars we can often do the job after closing or before deliveries start, which keeps disruption to trade down.

Common jobs in Soho

What we’re usually called out for here

Grease blockages in restaurant drains

Fat, oil and grease set hard inside drain pipes and narrow them until water backs up. We clear the line with high-pressure water jetting, which scours the pipe walls rather than just punching a hole through, then check the result on camera so you can see the pipe is clear.

Blocked toilets in bars and clubs

Busy venues put toilets and urinals under heavy load, and a blockage mid-shift is a real problem. We clear blocked toilets, urinals and the soil stacks behind them, and if the cause is further down the drain, we follow it until the whole run is clear and working.

Burst pipes in flats above shops

Older flats above Soho shops often have a mix of lead, copper and plastic pipework from different decades. When a joint fails or a pipe bursts, water quickly reaches the business below. We isolate the supply, find the source and repair it, keeping the mess to a minimum.

FAQs

Soho questions

Do you cover Soho at night?

Yes. We are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including weekends, and Soho sits right next to our Covent Garden base. Call 020 3670 7648 whenever the problem happens. We give you a free quote and confirm the price before any work begins.

Can you clear my restaurant drain without closing the kitchen?

Often, yes. Because we work around the clock, we can schedule drain unblocking after service or before you open. Unblocking is usually carried out on the same day you call. We will not leave until the drainage is clear and working, and we confirm the price before we start.

Is my Soho building’s drain shared with the neighbours?

Quite possibly. In older Soho terraces it is common for one drain run to serve several properties before it joins the sewer. A CCTV survey shows where the pipe runs and what it serves, which matters because shared sections outside your boundary are usually the water company’s responsibility.
